The European Union states used Friday (30/09) to attempt to come to an agreement on a shortcut to ratify the Paris climate accord, with ratification coming as early as next week.

To take effect, the accord needs ratification by 55 countries that account for 55% of global emissions. Currently, it is as 61 countries that produce 47.8% of carbon emissions. The EU, which is the 3rd largest contributor to global emissions, would put the accord over target and put it into effect.

Germany, Hungary, France, Austria and Slovakia have already ratified the Paris accord, with Theresa May announcing at the UN that the UK would shortly follow.
