The Society was extremely pleased to welcome representatives from the 24 professional bodies licensed to award the Chartered Environmentalist qualification to the Society’s 13th Council. The Council is part of the organisational apparatus of the Society and where high level decisions are made, ensuring that the Society continues to represent the licensing bodies.

Following the council meeting, we had the opportunity to welcome Sarah Hardy from Defra to discuss the 25-Year Environment Plan with our eminent Honorary Fellows and Council Members. The Honorary Fellows of the Society for the Environment are chosen as they are notable and outstanding champions for the environment. They embody the values of the Society and have the knowledge and experience to promote environmental protection through best practice. Needless to say, they welcomed the insight into the currently unreleased 25-Year Environment Plan and the opportunity to raise any potential concerns.

The Society also had the pleasure to induct four new Honorary Fellows.

The new Honorary Fellowships awarded were to outspoken journalist and campaigner George Monbiot, noted academic Professor Tim Benton, industry leader Peter Simpson and the Right Honourable the Lord Smith of Finsbury for a lifetime of political environmental work.

The four new Honorary Fellows join an influential company of other professionals, politicians, scientists, business leaders and campaigners who have previously been honoured by the Society for the Environment.

The Society frequently calls upon its Honorary Fellows to ensure that its policy and recommendations towards environmental protection are well informed and based on sound knowledge and experience. Most recently, the Society consulted its Honorary Fellows in its advice to Government on how to implement the Sustainable Development Goals within the United Kingdom.
